Two Copyrights.

Every original song creates two separate copyrights: the composition and the recording. Each one earns its own royalties, collected through different channels.

Publishing Questions, Answered

What is music publishing and why is it important?

Music publishing is the process of managing and protecting the copyright of songwriters and composers. It ensures you get paid whenever your music is streamed, performed, broadcast, or used commercially.

How is publishing different from distribution?

Distribution collects income for the sound recording (master), while publishing collects income for the songwriting (composition). They are separate income streams, and you need both to earn 100% of what your music makes.

Who should use publishing administration?

Any songwriter, composer, producer, or independent artist who owns songwriting rights. You do not need a record label. Independent artists often miss these royalties simply because their songs are not registered properly.

Do I keep ownership of my compositions?

Yes, you always retain 100% ownership of your compositions. P Tune Studio acts as your publishing administrator, not the owner of your music.

What are PROs and why do they matter?

Performance Rights Organizations like ASCAP, BMI and PRS collect performance royalties on behalf of songwriters. We make sure your music is registered properly with these organizations worldwide.

What if a song has multiple writers?

When a song has multiple contributors, copyright splits determine how income is shared. We help you define and register these splits clearly so everyone gets paid correctly.

Can I earn royalties internationally?

Yes. We work with a global collection network, so your music earns income across multiple countries, not just your home market.

How and when do I get paid?

Royalties are collected by PROs and mechanical societies and reported to us. Your earnings are then paid to you with transparent statements, and where possible royalties are collected retroactively after registration.
